Periphery

“In this series, the themes of the paintings derive from situations typical of urban peripheries. Poor outlying areas provide us images of the spirit of the city, sometimes with shadows of overcrowded people. Many buildings were designed to flatter the most primitive tastes, featuring loud color schemes bordering on vulgarity. It was precisely that characteristic that attracted my attention. In painting these pictures, I tried to answer the question of whether that sensitivity can be encompassed by artistic creativity.” (Edi Hila)
